Long before Lake Oswego became known for its waterfront homes, Portland residents were discovering the recreational opportunities offered by the lake and its surrounding countryside. During the late 1800s, the lake was known as Sucker Lake, named for the fish that inhabited its waters. By the 1890s, Portland residents were traveling to Oswego to enjoy fishing, swimming, hunting, picnicking, and other outdoor activities.
